Happy spring, Red Hook!

March has not been the cruelest month but it has been the most diverse month: rain and cold, sun and a tiny bit too warm so that my daffodils came into bloom weeks earlier than usual. But now we are ready for the “real” spring flowers. For me, that means the spring ephemerals.

Spring ephemerals break my heart. Trout Lily, Bloodroot, Trillium—the most delicate of flowers bloom but one long week. I always feel an urgency to enjoy these fleeting beauties, so be sure not to miss them. Better yet—join us at 7 in the morning on Mondays to walk down Cruger Island Road where you are sure to see all of these wonders of spring. You won’t be alone—we’ve had up to twenty-two intrepid souls rising before dawn to greet the spring (even in the wind and cold!).

On these morning walks we have seen Eagles and listened to Winter Wren, spied a rare Rusty Blackbird with their blazing white eyes, and delighted in the Wood Ducks crying as they take flight. Beyond the joy of seeing and hearing the treasures of the natural world, for me it has been such a joy to watch Bard students talking with local birders, talking with Red Hook residents as we walk and explore. Witnessing this diverse human community weave together is for me as heartening as hearing the peepers calling their love from a vernal pool.

So what is in store for April? A lot. Ramps are poking up, birds are returning, trees are budding. And we’re going to delight in it all through our walks and talks. See below for a complete description of our April events.

See you on the trails,
Susan Fox Rogers

Announcements

Introducing our new Board President: Last month, the Library's Board of Trustees unanimously voted in Anna Greig as the new Board President. Anna is a lawyer currently working at Greig Farm and raising two young children. She currently supports Greig Farm's market garden, sustainable infrastructure projects, web presence and event planning. She previously practiced corporate law in New York City and received her JD from Columbia Law School and her BA in English from Georgetown University. Anna is passionate about building community, reading and spending time outdoors. She joined the Red Hook Library Board of Trustees in January 2023. We thank Don O'Shea for his tireless service and steadfast commitment to the Library as the past Board President.

Eclipse Glasses: We still have a few eclipse glasses left. Stop by either of our circulation desks for your pair today. Limit 3/family. And don't worry, if you cannot grab some, we will have plenty available for our viewing party on the 8th.

Poetry Month: Celebrate Poetry Month throughout April at the Library. Stop by the main circulation desk for a free poem from our DIY poetry vending machine; check out our poetry displays; write and share your own poetry; and join us later in the month for a poetry slam.

Seed Library launches on April 22: We could think of no better way of celebrating Earth Day than by launching our brand new Seed Library. Thanks to Adams in Kingston, Phantom Gardener, FedCo, Sow Right Seeds, and Bard Farms, our patrons will have access to a wide-variety of seeds. Whether you are a beginner or have the greenest of thumbs, our Seed Library and resources will provide the support you and your garden needs to flourish. Seeds will not need to be returned, limit 10 seed packets/person. You must have a Library card in good standing to participate.

Kid Librarian: Does your child love the Library? Do they have a favorite book or author? Stop by our Children's Desk with your child to apply to become our next Kid Librarian. The Kid Librarian gets to create their very own Library display of their favorite books, movies, steam kits, toys, or other Library things. They also have the opportunity to "work" the desk, checking in books, searching for items, and greeting our patrons! A new Kid Librarian is announced every 2 weeks.

Ascienzo Naturalist-in-Residence Programs

Monday Morning Walks - Cruger Island Road Mondays at 7 AM
Join Susan every Monday morning at 7 AM with a walk down Cruger Island Road in the Tivoli Bays.  These walks are a great way to start the week! These walks are open to all. The terrain is easy—a wide gravel road that allows for walking side-by-side. There is some incline—the road goes downhill to the bays—so the return might be strenuous for some. We will walk out onto the Cruger Causeway, which can be muddy, so wear sturdy shoes, and if you want to venture further out, ones you don’t care if they get muddy. For walks in March/April dress warmly. Birding is slow. Participants can join and leave the walk at any time—this is an “out and back.”

Thursday Evening Nature Talks
April 11 and April 25 at 5:30 PM
On April 11 Susan will be covering invasive species, and non-native species—what are the challenges? what can you do? And on April 25, she will talk all things nature writing and nature journaling, starting with the “classics” of nature writing (Leopold, Muir, Thoreau, and a few lesser known but no less wonderful women writers ) and then—weather permitting—go outside to do a little nature journaling/drawing.
