Gingerbread Houses

December 23, 2016

Did you know that Gingerbread has been around for thousands of years? Dating back to the ancient Greeks and Egyptians, firm baked gingerbread was often used for religious or ceremonial purposes with saints and other religious icons being depicted in the form of gingerbread. Beginning in the 17th Century, baking gingerbread men and women became a popular Christmas tradition. It wasn’t until the publishing of the German Brother’s Grimm fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel in 1812 that the tale’s spooky ginger dwelling became translated to the delectable and fun tradition we now know as Gingerbread Houses. Books influence everything! Join us at Red Hook Public Library in the tween room for our wonderful seasonal Gingerbread house making craft!
